Hangin' Downtown

I took some time out from work yesterday and headed downtown to hang out until Touré's 7pm reading @ Housingworks Used Book Café. I don't like SoHo, but I went back to the Apple Store. I discovered that there are TWO Sister Genii! WORK! I played with stuff, including a digital camera that I'd like to purchase soon. Stacey, one of my favorite people on the Apple Store staff, took a picture of me yesterday but the Internet wasn't working on that machine, for some reason. *pout!* Anyway, I bought something cheap just to have one of those cool bags with the Apple logo. Such a show-off!

  1. I've written a pornographic story starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and me.

  2. I've had sex with my sister's boyfriend.

  3. I've never had sex out in the open.

  4. Once, I declined to go downtown with a good friend because this guy he was trying to date was secretly on his way to my house.

  5. I've never had sex with someone that I really loved.

Entrenched (A Riff)

I have a lot of work now. At this very moment, I'm in the middle of 3 projects and approaching the on-ramp of two more. Work Is Good! I've been working pretty hard - mostly to keep from being overwhelmed. I'm still not at the point where my bills are paid - in fact, I owe every single one right now. I know that will change dramatically very soon, but I'm still here in the now. It's hard living like this.

Hangin' Out With Al

I know, I haven't been posting much lately, but I've been busy working. Trying to secure my future - hell, trying to survive my present! So, I've been busy, looking grizzly, but yesterday I took some time out to hang with my cuzzin Al as he attended his first Macworld Expo. We did that for a hot minute and then went downtown to see Apple's shiny new SoHo store. Looks like Banana Republic without all the clothes racks. And I don't know about that dangerous-looking glass staircase. Anyway, I was really glad to see a sister behind the Genius Bar.

I simply MUST have a DV camcorder now! I LOVE iMovie! I'd never really used it before and making that clip was so easy!

Mac Week Exciter

Rumours abound surrounding what to expect of this week's Macworld Expo; from 20 gig iPods to glimpses of G5 PowerMacs to turning iTools into a paid service (a la Microsoft's Hotmail) to iMacs with 17-inch LCDs.

I changed my mind - I'm going with my cousin and his son on Friday. So holla if ya see meh nah ... if not there, at the grand opening of SoHo's Apple Store the day before and watch me corner Steve Jobs and demand that he build one in Harlem. Or watch the black-shirted staff scurry as cops whisk me away ... *grin!*

Y'all, she's going under the knife on July 29th for a very large herniated disk that's kept her in extreme pain for months now. Please join me in sending him lots of loving positive energy and warm wishes for a speedy recovery.

And if you're in the area, get her something to eat. Before he convinces his doctor to snatch some ribs out and serve them for dinner ...

In a word - YIKES!

I am watching an army of small, perfectly formed nuggets march along a conveyor belt, with manufacturer Gary Stiles, at his factory in Wiltshire. He has spent his life in the meat trade. At one end of the factory line is a pulp of half-frozen meat and skin in a giant stainless-steel hopper. Minced and mixed beyond recognition, it is being extruded through a small tube on to metal plates. These press it into pale pink nugget shapes which then trundle on down the belt. Through a dust bath of flour and seasoning they go, before being lowered under a sheet of constantly pouring batter. Then on in juddering formation through a tray of scattered breadcrumbs and into a vast vat of boiling oil for 30 seconds.

Blog Not Blog

I really haven't blogged, for real, since I assimilated transitioned up to Movable Type. I've been more focused on making it clever and pretty up in here (oh, if beautifying my home were only as simple!) and adding some the old entries I mentioned a couple of days ago. (The picture? I just felt like gazing at a happier picture of Zora Neale Hurston ... )

I truly have been up all weekend messin' around with my brand-new Movable Type-powered blog. No, your eyes do not deceive you - you can now link directly to my blog. No more wading through pop-up boxes, pretty pictures or resumes (unless you want to) just to get to my currently interesting thoughts!

It's like Lego all over again! I like it so much that I've also added my LiveJournal entries from last year. Soon, I'll also add my workout journal entries from my (failed) attempt at the Body-for-LIFE challenge. Well, that didn't work, but I think I've become a pretty good writer. I can really see how much I've grown just over the past couple of years. Blogging is such a great idea!

But today is Monday and I have to get back to work, really I do. Plus, I haven't REALLY cleaned my house in a while and I'm feeling like I need to do something analog.

I'm afraid my Blogger days are over ... This blog is now powered by Movable Type 2.21, the fantastically powerful Content Management System that you install on your own server. I see that I'm going to be playing with this for a while - I was up ALL NIGHT FREAKIN' WEEKEND! It's easy to install, but I'm SUCH a perfectionist!

Tomorrow is the 150th Anniversary of Frederick Douglass' classic oratory "The Meaning of the Fourth of July for the Negro" at an event commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Today, while a second application of lethal fumes extinguished a second wave of pesky pests, I hung out with Harlem historian Michael Henry Adams (whose soon-to-be-published book Harlem: Lost and Found promises to be THE centerpiece of Black coffee tables from coast to coast, judging from the breathtaking galleys I've seen). I bumped into him as I was leaving my brownstone. He was headed somewhere, but we ended up back at his apartment to enjoy some frosty orange juice. Once I finished my glass, we went back into the extremely oppressive heat to catch a cab to go see his friend, Marvin.
