Derrick Bell, the first Black professor of Harvard Law School (though, he now recommends NYU's Law School) spoke today at Hue-Man Bookstore where he read from his new book, Ethical Ambition: Living a Life of Meaning and Worth. I became acquainted with him through my work on Keith Boykin's site. I got to shake his hand tonight while thanking him for supporting Black gay men so publicly through the years. (He participated in the National Black Gay & Lesbian Leadership Forum's contigent at the Million Man March.) He said, "I better, two of my three sons are gay!"
Although I'm not Christian, something he said resonated within me; something that I know will help me make many decisions in my life. He quoted Jesus from the Gospel of Thomas:
His disciples questioned him and said to him, "Do you want us to fast? How shall we pray? Shall we give alms? What diet shall we observe?" Jesus said, "Do not lie, and do not do what you hate, for all things are exposed in the presence of the sky. There is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing covered that will remain undiscovered.
