Capoeira is probably the single most potent way I've learned to connect with my ancestors in my lifetime. I've mentioned the Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira before, on this blog; I've also mentioned how much I enjoy doing the difficult Capoeira Workout. Edna Lima is the founder of Capoeira Workout and the world's first female Mestranda in capoeira. It is her special energy, her knowledge, her graceful (and deadly!) style, her relentlessness and her encouragement that first inspired me to take her classes about two years ago ... and to return to the Capoeira Workout after a year of absence. She is a remarkable woman that I'm honored to call a personal friend.
Follow the link to get the details of the upcoming fundraiser (Tuesday, October 22) being produced to help her through this difficult time in her life. Please support her by attending this event, if you can.
Here is the text presented on the flyer:
The Friends of Edna Lima present: The Edna Lima Fundraiser Capoeira Workout and Maculele Tuesday, October 22, 2002 7:30-8:45pm at Alvin Ailey Dance Center 211 West 61st Street, 4th Floor (between West End and Amsterdam Avenues)The past year has been difficult for all of us - the attacks, falling economy and emotional chaos have been demanding. Through all this we have learned to share our burdens and strengths - and we're grateful for the hours of calm and self-awareness we have found in Capoeira and Capoeira Workout.
During this time Edna Lima, our friend and instructor, was confronted with additional challenges: the sudden death of her mother-in-law and soon after her father, after a long illness, and an emergency flight to Brazil for several weeks of critical care nursing.
And finally, on her return to New York City, Edna was stricken with a dangerous recurrence of Spinal Meningitis. the events cost the loss of almost two months income and unexpected funeral expenses. And so while Edna is recovering her health she is continuing to suffer economic stress.
Suggested donation: $20 - but please don't miss this event. Come and talk to us, and we may arrange in-kind contributions for your donation.
And, just in time for the holidays, a Capoeira bazaar featuring new Capoeira Workout Gear from Brazil. These are Edna's designs she had made during her recent stay - including Jackets, Warm-ups, and Street Abada (capoeira pants).
