Have The Gift of Gab? I Need Your Help!

I have a Jabber Instant Messager server that I'm testing. You can help!

What is Jabber? To put it simply, it's free, completely cross-platform, open-source instant messaging (unlike proprietary IM services offered by either AOL, ICQ , MSN or Yahoo!). It's decentralized (and quite secure) so it offers a really inexpensive way for organizations (and individuals) to develop their own secure IM networks. Similar to the non-profit Mozilla Foundation, the Jabber Software Foundation develops the protocol and the server. They develop their own client (for Windows only *rolls eyes*) but they really support a community of others who have developed a myriad of Jabber clients.

And they mean business - they just knocked ICQ out the box.

Here's what I need you to do:

  1. Request a user account. You can either e-mail me or use my handy-dandy Contact form. Please include your preferred username and password in the message. Also let me know if it's okay to post your username here so others can chat with you.
  2. Download a Jabber client. There are plenty to choose from. Can't make up your mind? Well, my favorite easy-to-use clients for Mac OS X are Fire and Proteus. (And you can also use both of these with existing AOL, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo! IM accounts!) If I had to use a Windows PC (perish the thought!), I would as least try the original Jabber client. Have fun with it!
  3. Find other people. I think this is the real beauty of Jabber - you subscribe to each other person's presence. When you create a new Jabber account, you can't chat unless you know somebody to chat with. Once you find someone, you add their contact. They can choose to accept you - or not. This process is called the subscription handshake. So, shake a hand, tell a friend! In the meantime, feel free to chat with me (donald), Philippe (pynyc), Ronn (ronn), Bernie (bt11360), Eric (enoir) and test daemons marlon, essex and audre. Most clients require you to add @anzidesign.com to the username so that it resembles an e-mail address (i.e. essex@anzidesign.com); others might ask for the server (anzidesign.com) somewhere else. If you're Jabber client supports group chat, I've created a room at daspot@conference.jabber.com. (Chatroom names follow the same syntax as usernames.)
  4. Chat! Chat with me! Chat with each other! Chat up a storm!

You can also read the Jabber User Guide and the FAQ for a better understanding of Jabber IM services and for lots of tips on getting started, but I'm gonna try to make this as simple as possible ...
