Laptop Luxuries In The Naked City

Well, it seems that I had spoken too soon - Con Edison showed up yesterday afternoon to turn off the juice. I didn't even put up a fight or try to weave any elaborate pretense to pay the ridiculous bill. I did go back in and turned everything off, though, while I still had that power.

My laptop was fully charged, although the 20% capacity that my battery erroneously maxes out at can hardly be considered full. I got back online through that stray wireless network, but it's too weak and inconsistent to really be of any use for any extended period of time. Fortunately, I have a contingency plan that I've been developing in anticipation of this 'lectro-lapse - the library.

Philippe has mentioned the excursions that he and I have been making throughout the city in search of free Wi-Fi access, so I'm a bit prepared. There are many libraries that offer it and lots of public spaces like Bryant Park, Union Square Park and City Hall Park (both provided by Emenity.com) provide it, too. Tekserve isn't a public space, but they don't mind if you lounge in the vestibule for their hookup. If you need to recharge a lot like me, you'll need to get to some juice. Usually I can find a convenient one at any library, but at the parks, you're off on your own, girl. However, I've noticed that a lot of McDonald's have outlets at some of the tables. So, if you're in a pinch, buy a bottle of water (unless using a space without contributing to its business doesn't bother you) and plug up. And the Soho Apple Store has outlets in its theater, so you can act like you're there for one of the workshops while secretly checking your e-mail and parrying instant messages.

Yesterday, I eventually packed up the laptop and went to the Morningside Heights branch (which closes late on Thursdays). During my daily ritual of gleaning through Craigslist.org Job Postings for people to bombard with my resume, I found this listing. Like Six Apart, Neighborhoodies has that populist schwang going on; it seems like a really cool company to work for. So I pushed a little somethin somethin out of iPhoto to give them a taste of my photographic goodness. I wanted to add a little zest (and some XHTML 1.1 conformity) to the bland pages that iPhoto created, so as closing time encroached, I took the whole lot of it through BBEdit for a little last minute grepping. I uploaded the files to my server, checked it, made corrections, uploaded again and sent that e-mail out with not a moment to spare. I hope they like it.

laptop docking stations @ SIBL

I got up this morning with what I think it a great idea for a project I'm currently working on, so I got up and came to the Science, Industry and Business Library here at 34th and Madison. They don't have Wi-Fi (at least not for the public ...) but they do have these cute laptop docking stations. Each little desk has its own outlet and Ethernet port - and the chair is Aeron by Herman Miller. So, I'll be here for most of the day, working diligently towards some more prosperity and progression.

Good Luck Donald! I hope the folks at neighborhoodies call you in for that project. I saw the album you made for them, the shots are on point.

Much Love!

philippe

Aeron chairs! Ugh…I am so jealous. Pea green, ya know. If the folks at Neighborhoodies don’t like these pictures, then tell them to turn down the white exposure on their cameras.

Zing!
