Proliferate Your Art

So, you didn't get to experience Art in Harlem ... well, I plan on rubbing your face in it later. You missed it and this event is not one to miss. Everyone in attendance (and it was, like Panwoman would say, "PACK UP!" - or like Harmonica would say, "KA'PACKED!") had a great time! Most of all, I had a wonderful time sharing my photography, being a part of such a wonderful exhibition of our art and being surrounded and inundated by so much love. I can't wait to do more!

I wrote that sestina pantoum yesterday as a quick little exercise after being inspired by the usual onslaught of medication commercials during my soaps (however much they are truly mine) and Oprah. Maybe one day we'll be able to just pop a pill for loneliness!

Anyhoo, Cheryl Boyce Taylor is the real deal in poetry. (Yes, you missed her, too!) I always have to at least TRY to write something after I experience the art she weaves when she tells her stories through her poetry - through her body. An she bring she friend, Rodlyn Douglas to talk about de Panwoman! OH GOSH!!

There are a couple of upcoming opportunities to witness and learn from Cheryl firsthand. Tonight, she begins a free writing workshop presented by the New York Public Library:

"Birthing Gifts: Reclaiming Our Heritage, Defining Our Birth Gifts." A series of writing classes conducted by Cheryl Boyce Taylor.

every Tuesday from May 18 through June 22, 6:00 PM

In this class students will trace their family heritage and culture through writing. Exercises will include documenting birth gifts, exploring family heirlooms and mapping our your writing path. Students are asked to bring sample writiing and childhood and family photos. Preregistration is required.

And next month, she gathers what I'm sure will be a fine collection of poets and performers to celebrate the life of Audre Lorde through her poetry and the music she loved:

Cheryl Boyce Taylor has done it again... assembled the finest cast of poet/performers.
