No Blackface on MLK Day

| | Comments (2) | TrackBacks (0)

Sources tell me that Junior Vasquez has invited Shirley Q. Liquor and her racist blackface alcoholic welfare mama drama to host a party he's throwing at Club Spirit on the day our nation celebrates the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The following is the e-mail and press release that Kenyon sent to me:

Honor the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior by Giving the Boot to Shirley Q!

Junior Vasquez is hosting a MLK Jr. Day party and has invited Shirley Q. Liquor to emcee. Many in the community will remember this racist and offensive act in which Chuck Knipp- a white man, puts on blackface and plays a Black woman who is a welfare recipient with 19 children. Lesbian Gay Bisexual Two Spirit and Trans People Of Color and allies in NYC have said no to Shirley Q. twice before, and this time we are taking it one step further! We will be awarding the "Jesse Helms Award for Profiting from Racism and Misogyny on Martin Luther King Jr. Day” to Chuck Knipp, Junior Vasquez and Club Spirit. Please join us by coming out to chant and participate in a press conference to send a message that we don't support businesses that profit from racism, woman bashing, and classism. The press conference will start at 1pm, so we are asking supporters to arrive by 12:30. We are hoping to be done by 2pm, so folks can move on to honor this important national holiday.

When:
Monday, January 17, 12:30 pm

Where:
Club Spirit
530 West 27th, between 10th and 11th Ave.
C/E Train to 23rd and 8th Ave.

Thanks and see you there!

This is my first post from Flickr. I think I've finally found the photoblogging solution that fits me. Yay! Here's another composite I did last night. Redoing it as we speak because the original Photoshop file got corrupted or something ...

Tell me: what do you do when you find someone attractive? Okay ... then what do you do when that attraction is less mutual than you want? Some may leave it alone altogether; it may hurt too much for that person to be present in your life in any capacity other than what you imagined. Others may go to the other extreme, determined to singlehandedly make love happen, whatever the cost - usually with calamitous results.

I got two Flickr-related surprises today! First, a very good friend of mine sponsored an upgrade for my account to the Pro version! Then, a get a message from someone on staff telling me that a photoset of mine is being featured on FlickrBlog! Sweet!

We haven't even got in a good week yet and here I am with guilty pleasures already:

Teen Titans Battle Blitz. It's like Mortal Kombat Lite! I may even watch the cartoon this Saturday! I'm so hooked it's not even FUNNY!

ABC Television: Desperate Housewives, Alias (Did y'all see Ms. Bassett TURN IT last night? And something tells me we haven't seen the last of Lena Olin's Irina Derevko - even if she is dead) and maybe even Boston Legal now that they've snagged Candice Bergen (but how long can a show based in Boston hold my attention - especially without a Black person in sight?) ...

Ciara's One, Two Step. I played this video over at the iTunes Music Store continuously until I got it DOWN! Crunk? Whatever - there's more Germany than Dirty South up in this track.

Meetup.com. And I haven't even been to a meeting yet! Not even one!

Absolutely Fabulous and French & Saunders. Hilarious! Thought-provoking! Decadent! English! Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders BRING IT!

Apple-related news and rumors: OMG, it's a flash-based iPod! OMG, it's an Office-killer! OMG, it's a Firewire audio interface! OMG, it's a headless Mac! OMG, it's some kind of network that lets you buy anything from Xserves to iTunes downloads from your celphone! OMGOMGOMG!!!!!!!!

This Is My Fucking City

It became clear to me 3am last Tuesday morning, as I walked through freezing air from the A train to the 2 down 42nd Street. I came across a gigantic banner heralding the arrival of what apparently will be a gigantic Marc Ecko store and thought "If he can parlay selling trash to a legion of unsuspecting hip-hop-addled youth and blossoming into a 'designer label' by merely slapping on an English-looking font and a coat of arms into a premium 10,000 square foot retail outlet in the heart of Times Square, then it's not too late for me. This is my fucking city!"
